I was in a gathering and the topic turned to the evil eye. There were those who denied it and said, "I do not believe in it at all, and there is no such thing as the evil eye."

And they gave psychological explanations.

We say in such intellectual matters, some people interpret unseen things with sensory logic.

And sensory logic, no doubt, is used by those who judge the sharia, and also weigh the religious texts from the Book of Allah and the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ against their own reasoning.

This will lead them step by step to atheism, and these things are among the dangerous matters. For this reason, we say it is established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: The evil eye is real.

So we say regarding this, in fact, it has also come in some narrations.

Most people die because of the evil eye, and this shows that if it can cause death, then it can also affect things less than that.

This was also mentioned even in previous laws, in the law of the Children of Israel.

And that is in the story of Yaqub when he advised his sons not to enter through one gate, but to enter through different gates.

The reason for that was to avoid being envied and to avoid being looked at. This was also confirmed from the sahaba, may Allah be pleased with them.

In this regard, there are reports, whether stopped narrations, such as when the Prophet ﷺ saw a girl with a mark on her face.

Also, in the hadith of Uthman ibn Affan about the boy's uvula, and other things that prove the reality of this matter.

As for a person saying that these are psychological things, meaning if he intends by that that they are internal matters, then yes, they are internal matters. But as for saying that these are just baseless whispers and thoughts, there is no doubt that this is falsehood.

This is falsehood, and it comes from following desires. This would also require denying magic, since a person does not see it, and the same applies to things that a person cannot see.

Its effect is established, and for this reason we say that among the things that cannot be sensed, there is still an effect. That is why you find even the path of communications in devices and phone calls and so on—how the sound is transmitted.

The transmission of such things to things that are not tangible, yet a person has created something intangible and believes in it. These are the things that Allah, the Exalted, has informed us about, and He is their Creator.

It is more appropriate for a person to give precedence to the command of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.

And he should refrain from believing in what he does not find material evidence for, and he must submit to the command of Allah, the Exalted. That is why these things have come.

The Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for Hasan and Husayn by saying: I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah.

From every devil and poisonous creature, and from every envious eye. This is evidence that the evil eye, envy, can affect a person. That is why we say this logic is faulty, it is rational logic.

It follows a person, and it is a materialistic tendency found in all nations.

It was found in all nations, and that is why miracles were sent to counter it.

The disbelievers of Quraysh also had this urge and tendency, and they denied what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought when he told them things their minds could not accept, such as the Isra and Mi'raj.

And also regarding the very basis of prophethood, since they needed some clear signs, so Allah the Mighty and Majestic sent some miracles.

to the Prophet ﷺ, yet they still stubbornly rejected. That is why we say that when it comes to a person who speaks only about material things, there must.

be belief in the unseen, not just material proof. This is undoubtedly due to weak certainty, for Allah the Mighty and Majestic has decreed and clarified with established rulings.

Even if there are no material proofs, submitting to this is a quality of the people of iman, while those who hesitate in this are the people of doubt, suspicion, and hypocrisy. And Allah knows best. May Allah reward you, Shaykh, and grant you goodness.
