In a single night, the men of Quraysh stood outside a house in Mecca, waiting for the moment of sleep to kill one man.
But the house did not know that fate had opened another door for its owner. Quraysh agreed on a decision they had never agreed upon before.
That they would choose from every tribe a strong young man to strike Muhammad with the blow of one man, so his blood would be divided among the tribes.
So Banu Hashim would not be able to fight them all. They chose the night, surrounded the house from every side, swords drawn, eyes fixed on the door.
But the Prophet ﷺ did not sleep that night. He came to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, and told him to sleep in his bed.
And to cover himself with his green cloak. Ali did not ask for the reason. He slept in the place where the people were watching.
Then the Prophet ﷺ left from among them, and the narrations mention that he put dust on their heads and recited verses.
None of them saw him. These details come from the seerah and narrations, and the main story is confirmed in the Quran, but the details about the people being unconscious
remain from the reports that are narrated. He left Mecca in the darkness, with no army or guards.
Only one man was waiting for him outside Medina.
Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, did not take the well-known road directly north, but went to the cave of Thawr to the south.
In the opposite direction of what the search parties expected, and he stayed in the cave for several days.
While the swords of Quraysh were searching the roads, the pursuers reached the entrance of the cave. Abu Bakr said: If one of them looked under his feet, he would see us.
The Prophet ﷺ replied to him: What do you think of two, when Allah is their third? No one looked. The pursuers left, and in their place, a spider spun its web.
And a dove laid its nest, as mentioned in the prophetic biography.
This traditional image is not mentioned in the Quran.
But it remains in the Islamic memory.
As a sign that Allah may protect His servants with means that seem simple. Then the long journey to Yathrib began. The news had reached there before them.
And its people would go out every morning to the outskirts of Medina, waiting.
When the Prophet entered Medina, everything changed. The migration was not just an escape from swords.
It was a move from Mecca, which had become too tight for the truth, to a city that would open up for it.
