Is the leftover water of a cat pure or impure? Regarding the leftover water of a cat and similar animals, we say the basic ruling is that it is pure.
This has been reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as in the narration of Abu Qatada in the Musnad and the Sunan, that the Prophet ﷺ said: It is not impure, it is only one of those who go around among you.
This was also reported from a group of the early generations, it was reported.
Most of them, most of them held this view, and among the jurists of Medina like Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, Sulayman ibn Yasar, and others, that the leftover water of a cat is pure, based on the apparent meaning of this hadith.
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, began his book al-Muwatta with this hadith.
They mentioned it at the beginning of what he included in that, and this indicates.
This shows his attention to this matter, and also his consideration of such a ruling, since it is part of general hardship.
The sharia has made things easier in this regard. This includes the ruling on cats, for example.
And also birds that come and drink, like pigeons, and sparrows that drink from it, as well.
Anything with a similar ruling that comes into homes, for which there is no evidence of impurity, takes the same ruling as the cat. And Allah knows best.
What insects excrete—are they pure or impure? As for insects, we say that some are insects for which there is evidence of impurity.
And what there is evidence for its impurity, like the gecko and the mouse.
For these, there is evidence for their impurity, and among them are those for which there is no specific evidence for their impurity, but it is indicated by custom, knowledge, and experience, such as cockroaches and the like.
So we say these are impure, and whatever comes from them is also impure.
As for those for which there is no evidence of impurity, and there is also no indication from reasoning for their impurity, the basic principle regarding things is purity.
Pure things, such as what comes from ants and what comes from other insects and so on, we say the basic principle is that it is pure, and Allah knows best.
