The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Gold for gold, silver for silver, dates for dates, wheat for wheat, salt for salt, and barley for barley, hand to hand.
Whoever gives more or asks for more has engaged in usury.
This is a well-known authentic hadith, but keep in mind that in transactions like buying gold in Morocco, for example, you take a piece of jewelry and add money to it.
He takes another piece of jewelry that is more expensive. Is this considered usury? Yes, it is considered usury.
The question is, for example, a woman has a necklace, she has a ring.
She wants to change it, so she goes to the jeweler, the seller of jewelry, and says to him: I want to exchange this for something else.
I have this ring, I want to buy a necklace instead. The jeweler takes the ring.
He weighs it, says this is worth such and such. Okay, let's put it aside.
Which necklace did you see that you want, you take a necklace. For example, she agrees with him, he weighs it, this is the price, for example the ring, he says to her, this necklace is two thousand dirhams.
And the ring is a thousand dirhams, you will give me the ring, and you will add a thousand dirhams, and you will take this necklace for two thousand dirhams. This is not allowed. This is riba.
Because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: gold for gold.
Equal for equal, same for same. Silver for silver, equal for equal, same for same.
Your wife wants to buy gold, she wants to exchange her ring, she needs to go to the goldsmith.
She sells him that ring, takes the money, and it's better if she goes to another goldsmith.
She looks at what she wants and pays for it.
She shouldn't give it and add more on top.
Did you understand what I said? Your wife wants to buy the ring, the ring is four thousand dirhams. Okay.
I don't have four thousand dirhams for her to add to the ring, she doesn't have those four thousand dirhams, so she goes to the seller.
And she says to him, I will give you one thousand dirhams every month.
Until we reach four thousand dirhams. Did he add anything? He did not add anything.
This is not permissible. This is not permissible.
Gold and silver cannot be bought in installments.
Why? Because the Messenger ﷺ says: gold for gold.
Hand to hand, riba is only when it is not hand to hand. Hand to hand is what we call give and take, here you go, give me. Do you understand?
Also, you can't exchange it.
I give an old one, add something to it, and take a new one. It is not allowed to sell the old one.
Take the money, and it's better to go to someone else, and then buy with the money you have, or add your own money and buy something else. I have said this before.
I am repeating it, but is what I told you here for all types of sales?
No, I have my old clothes.
I gave it, added some money, and took a new one. There's no problem.
I bought a car in installments, there's no problem. The rulings I mentioned to you are specific to gold and silver when we buy with money.
