Combining intentions in fasting: she has to make up days from Ramadan and also wants to do an expiation fast for an oath. Shaykh, is it possible to combine them?
As for the fast of expiation and making up missed days, we say it is not allowed for her to combine the intention.
Combining making up Ramadan with voluntary fasting, we say: if the voluntary fast is unrestricted and not tied to a specific day.
The basic ruling is that it is allowed, and this is the view of the majority of scholars. But if it is a voluntary fast tied to a specific day,
such as someone who wants to make up Ramadan and also wants to fast a specific voluntary fast like Ashura or Arafah, this is an area of scholarly disagreement.
Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to make up Ramadan during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah.
So he combines, he combines. We say that what has come to us from Umar is evidence for the permissibility of combining, but as for obligatory fasting,
what is obligatory upon a person, such as fasting for a vow, or also expiations,
or also what is related to what is obligatory upon a person in fasting, like fasting for the hady, if a person does not find a sacrificial animal, such as fasting three days during Hajj and seven when he returns to his family.
We say regarding that, it is from the obligatory fasting, and it is not permissible for a person to combine it with making up Ramadan. And Allah knows best.
