Thank you. Reciting al-Fatiha behind an imam who does not give you the chance to recite it: regarding the audible prayers, the stronger opinion is that in the audible prayers, the follower does not recite behind the imam.
Because the command in this matter is to listen attentively, as Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: When the Quran is recited, listen to it and be silent. So we say this applies to reciting behind the imam in prayer.
And this is what the Prophet ﷺ brought: the imam is appointed to be followed, and it is narrated: When he recites, then listen attentively. This was also the practice of the sahaba, may Allah be pleased with them, in general.
Except for what is narrated from Abu Huraira in Sahih Muslim, and he has a narration that differs from this.
Therefore, we say that the basic principle is to remain silent, and this was the practice of the early generations, and also the view of the scholars who investigated the matter. So we say: remaining silent is preferable.
However, if a person is far from the imam and cannot hear his voice, or there is noise, then we say: he should recite.
At that point, he recites to himself without letting anyone hear, only moving his lips, moving his lips in that.
As for the invalidity of his prayer, the Prophet ﷺ said: There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book, it applies.
The silent prayer for the follower and the imam, and it also applies to the follower.
If he did not hear, and for the imam himself, and also for the individual praying alone.
As for the follower behind the imam in the audible prayer, some scholars have reported consensus that the prayer is not invalid, and this was reported by Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him.
That the prayer is not invalid for the one who leaves off reciting behind the imam in the audible prayer, and Allah knows best. May Allah reward you, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Tarifi, for this episode.
