He says: What is the ruling on standing up for a man in gatherings?
Whether it is a man or a woman, standing up for the one who enters.
It depends, if he is a guest who has come to you.
Then it is from the sunnah to stand up for him, welcome him, and seat him in a place.
As for what happens now in gatherings, for example, a man enters and shakes hands with those in the gathering.
First, this is not from the sunnah, shaking hands with those in the gathering.
It was the practice of the sahaba with the Prophet ﷺ that when they came to a gathering,
whoever entered would sit wherever the gathering ended, that's it.
He would enter, sit there, in the nearest place, sit quietly, greet everyone with a general greeting, and sit down.
Without shaking hands, let alone the kissing that has now become common among people. It's not just shaking hands and kissing now, this is a mistake.
The sunnah is to enter and sit, unless you haven't seen them for a long time, for example.
Okay, then, there's nothing wrong with shaking hands, and nothing wrong with kissing.
But the point is, if every time he enters, every day, every prayer, every time, he comes and shakes hands with all of them, this is not from the sunnah.
But there is nothing wrong with it, there is nothing wrong with it, but the sahaba of the Prophet ﷺ, when they entered upon the Prophet ﷺ, they would sit wherever the gathering ended for them.
This is one point. The second, the second point.
And that is, the basic rule for shaking hands is that it should be equal.
Between the one who is shaking hands and the one being greeted. So if the one who is shaking hands is standing, do not shake his hand while you are sitting; stand up for him.
Meaning, if someone comes to you. do not shake his hand while you are sitting and he is standing.
Rather, you stand up as he does. The important thing is that you are equal.
Either you both shake hands while sitting, or you both shake hands.
Standing. But if one of the two men shakes hands while standing and the other while sitting, this is against
the sunnah, and against proper manners, as the scholars say.
Rather, there should be equality between both parties.
In fact, sometimes, and this is seen.
Some people shake hands while sitting like this, just stretching out their hand to shake. This is a mistake, this is a mistake.
There is nothing wrong with standing up to greet him and shake his hand, but as we said, originally, the best is to enter and sit down. That is what is best.
But if the handshake happens, some people make a mistake and say the sunnah is not to stand up.
So he greets him and shakes his hand while sitting, and the other as well.
Rather, the sunnah is equality between both sides: either both stand up or both
sit. This is the sunnah, so the point is
What is forbidden is what is mentioned in the hadith from the Prophet ﷺ: Whoever likes people to stand up for him.
Let him take his seat in the Fire. This means the one who, when he enters a gathering, wants everyone.
stand up for him, and when he leaves, all the people.
To stand up for him, whether they shake his hand or not, and if they do not stand up for him, he becomes sad.
He feels upset and thinks they have fallen short in his right. This person and those like him,
The Prophet ﷺ says to him: Whoever likes people to stand up for him, let him take his seat.
from the Fire. But if it is during a handshake, the basic principle is equality between them.
