He also asks on Twitter: what is the ruling on dyeing hair black?
Regarding dyeing hair black, the Prophet, peace be upon him, mentioned in Sahih Muslim from the narration of Jabir ibn Abdullah.
That the Prophet ﷺ saw the hair of Ibn Abi Quhafa, and the Prophet ﷺ said: Change this and avoid black.
The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, differed regarding the Prophet's ﷺ statement: "and avoid black"—whether it is directly from him or added by some of the Companions or narrators.
There is a difference of opinion about this hadith; it came from the narration of Abu al-Zubair from Jabir ibn Abdullah, and it was narrated from him by Ayyub ibn Tamim al-Sakhtiyani and a group.
Some of them said that this is from the words of the Prophet ﷺ, and this was narrated from Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, before, and from those who said it is added.
This is because it has been reported and asked about in some narrations, and it was said that it is not from the words of the Prophet ﷺ, and in another narration it was said that it is from the words of the Prophet, peace be upon him. In any case,
we say that this matter is from the Prophet, peace be upon him.
It is understood as being disliked in the sense of recommendation. It is understood as being disliked, disliked in the sense of recommendation.
That is because the context of the hadith includes a command and a prohibition. The command in it is: Change this, meaning change the white hair.
Then it includes a prohibition, he said: and avoid, and avoid black.
And if we take the prohibition in his saying "and avoid.." as being forbidden, then we must take the command to change the white hair as obligatory.
Or we can consider both commands, one as recommended and the other as disliked, so we say regarding his ﷺ statement: "Change this," that this is recommended.
And his statement: "Avoid black," that this is mildly disliked, and this is the most apparent; because it has been authentically narrated from Hasan and Husayn that they used to dye with black.
And this indicates its permissibility, especially for those who deliver the Friday khutbah, and likewise on Eid when appearing before the people.
So this is among the matters that are visibly practiced, and there are also reports from a group of the salaf permitting this matter, and what appears to me—and Allah knows best—
is that dyeing with black is not forbidden, but we say it has two situations.
The first situation: if a person intends deception, if a person intends deception.
This is like someone who has, for example, a defect, as some skin or some, for example, blood or something like that, the hair appears, and the body is completely white.
This includes even, for example, a person's eyelash or eyelid and so on, some diseases similar to, for example, vitiligo and leukoderma and the like.
So a person uses this thing to hide a defect during a marriage proposal or something similar, and the same applies to a woman. We say this is not allowed.
We say this, this is not allowed because it is deception. As for the second case, if a person does not intend deception.
Rather, the person wants in this, either beautification or adornment or something like that, so we say about this: some of it is.
Some of it is not preferable, and this is how what came in the hadith is to be understood, such as the elderly man, the elderly man who tries to appear young and avoids this, considering that in this there is a kind of.
Turning away from the admonisher of life, and the admonisher of life in this case is gray hair.
This is because it reminds one of the Hereafter, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, as reported in al-Bukhari and others, said: Allah has given an excuse to a man who reaches the age of sixty.
The meaning of Allah giving an excuse to a man who reaches sixty is that he has witnessed the changes of life and the signs of his end.
One of the signs of the end is the gray hair that appears on a person's head.
So when he sees it and tries to hide it.
This is a kind of turning a blind eye and trying not to look at the end, and this is a kind of disdain and also turning away, and here I want to say that this.
In this case, it is disliked. But if it is for another purpose, then the basic ruling is that there is nothing wrong with it, there is nothing wrong with it, and Allah knows best.
