Here, Hatim from Saudi Arabia asked about the ruling on trimming the beard.

We say that the Prophet ﷺ mentioned in the narration of Abdullah ibn Umar, the Prophet ﷺ said: Let the beards grow, and leave the beards.

And likewise, there are also supporting narrations from Abu Huraira with various wordings.

As for letting it grow, it is obligatory, and a group of scholars such as Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi and others have reported consensus on this.

As for taking from it, we say: taking from it has been reported from a group of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.

This was reported from Abdullah ibn Umar as narrated by Nafi', and likewise there is a narration stopped at Abdullah ibn Umar.

He used to take a handful from his beard; this was mentioned regarding the rites, and it was also mentioned outside the rites that he would take from it as well.

And apparently in Ramadan, and it was also reported from some of the sahaba, as narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas in the narration of Ali ibn Abi Talha from Abdullah ibn Abbas.

He explained the saying of the Exalted and Most High: "Then let them complete their prescribed duties and fulfill their vows," he said: Completing the prescribed duties means that a man takes from his hair, from his head and his beard.

This was also reported from Abu Huraira, as narrated from him, and also from Jabir ibn Abdullah as a mawquf narration, and it was also narrated from a group of the tabi'in; some restricted it to a handful and some left it unrestricted, and in any case, this is a lengthy discussion.

We say that the summary of this issue is that a person is not allowed to take from his beard, provided that it does not go against the abundance, and the abundance here is the fullness that shows letting it grow and keeping it.

This was mentioned in the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: Let the beards grow, let the beards hang down, so if this meaning is included.

In that case, anything else is allowed for him. This differs according to certain criteria, including the differences in people's bodies, the thickness of their beards, and other factors.

So it goes back to the person's situation, his way, and the thickness of his hair. And Allah knows best.
