More than fourteen centuries ago, Mecca was home to the greatest house on the face of the earth.
The Kaaba, the house built by Ibrahim and Ismail, peace be upon them, and the Arabs would come to it from everywhere, honoring it and performing pilgrimage there.
In the south, Yemen was under the rule of Abraha al-Ashram, an ambitious man who dreamed that the caravans of pilgrims would turn to Yemen instead of Mecca.
My lord, the Arabs are still heading to Mecca.
Every year their trade increases and their influence grows, then.
We will make the whole world come to us. We will build the greatest church the peninsula has ever known. So Abraha ordered the construction of a church the likes of which people had never seen, with walls of marble.
With marble, decorations of gold, and towering doors, he thought the Arabs would abandon the Kaaba and turn to it, but nothing changed.
Hearts remained attached to the Kaaba. All the tribes still went to Mecca, so the Kaaba would not remain standing after today.
I will march to it and destroy it stone by stone. Work began day and night, for the goal was not just.
Preparing an army, but organizing the largest campaign the Arabian Peninsula had ever seen, with thousands of soldiers, horses, camels, and weapons the tribes had never seen before.
Among the ranks of the army was a giant elephant, the likes of which the Arabian Peninsula had never seen, and it became a symbol of this campaign.
The military caravan set out.
It crossed the desert, passed through the mountains, and drew closer and closer to Mecca. As the army approached, news about it began to spread among the tribes.
Fear spread throughout the entire peninsula.
Is it true that a great army is approaching? They say they did not come for trade, but for another purpose. The people of Mecca could not face Abraha's army.
As he approached Medina, he seized the camels of Abdul Muttalib, the leader of Quraysh.
O leader of Quraysh, the army has reached the edge of the valley.
They have taken the camels, including yours.
What should we do now? We have no ability to fight them.
We will not go out to fight them.
I will go to them myself. Then the leader of Mecca decided to go himself to meet the leader of the army.
I have been informed that your men took my camels.
I have come to ask for them to be returned.
I used to admire you, but then I lost interest in you when you spoke to me.
Are you talking to me about a hundred camels you took from me, and leaving aside the House, which is your religion and the religion of your forefathers?
I have come to destroy it, do not talk to me about it.
I am the lord of the camels.
And indeed, the House has a Lord who will protect it.
Did he respond to your request? Return my camels to me, as for the House, he is determined to destroy it. And what will we do? We will return to Mecca, then order the people to go out to the mountains.
O people of Quraysh, we have no power against this army. Go out to the mountains and valleys.
Until Allah decrees His command, and we leave the Kaaba, for the House has a Lord who protects it. A servant protects his own property. And Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of the Prophet, prayed to Allah.
That He would protect the Kaaba from the oppression of Abraha's army.
They moved towards Mecca. Master, the elephant will not move. Turn it towards Mecca.
Come on, move forward, pull hard. Master, it refuses to advance.
Turn it to the other direction. Why? Why does it not walk towards Mecca?
Every time we turned him towards Mecca, he sat down and refused to move.
Look at this, what is this? I have never seen anything like this before.
Look, what is this?
What? They are birds, countless numbers. Run, run! It is a punishment from.
From the sky! My lord, the army has scattered, let us return to Yemen.
Go back, it's over.
Praise be to Allah, I am the Lord of the camels.
And indeed, the House has a Lord who protects it, a Lord who protects it, a Lord who protects it. Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?
