Won't you join us at Dar al-Nadwa? We've missed your company. It's alright.
But right now I'm at work.
And among you there is sufficiency. Why has Abu Bakr abandoned our gatherings for some time, as if something serious has.
preoccupied him, and he is hiding it from us. He used to be a friendly, sociable man.
Sociable. Ah, Umar! How are you, son of al-Khattab? I'm well as long as my uncles are well. Then come with us.
Or are you also busy? Nothing keeps me away from my people, so if you wish, let's go.
Uthman, where are you going?
To the gathering of the people. Is there an incident you want to discuss? No, it's just the usual meeting.
And if it were otherwise, you would have been the first to know.
Something is troubling you, so if you wish, let me know about it.
I will help you with whatever I can.
In fact, I have something by which I hope your situation will be set right, and I would not keep it for myself without sharing it with those I love.
And to me, you are the best companion. You are the same to me. But what is this? Leave the gathering of the people today and come with me.
What do you think of your brother? Who? You?
Have I ever lied to you? No, you are the most truthful and the most loyal of people. More truthful than me is Muhammad ibn Abdullah.
By Allah, he is truly the most truthful and trustworthy, but what about Muhammad? Won't you explain?
Until you promise me that you will keep secret what I tell you, whether you accept it or dislike it.
By the Lord of the Kaaba, you have occupied my mind. I promise you to keep it secret.
You are only asking me to keep this secret because it is something great.
Yes, it is something great. The Arabs have never encountered anything like it before. It contains the rectification of their affairs in this world and the Hereafter.
The Hereafter? What is the Hereafter?
How did you leave your cousin Muhammad, I mean?
In the best state with his Lord. And what is his Lord? I saw you with him today in the valley.
I did. What was it that I saw you both doing? You were making sujud and standing up, and it is not the sujud we know with our idols.
And I have never seen him or you making sujud to our idols before.
It is the prayer, my father, the prayer that Allah has made obligatory on His Prophet. Prophet? You mean.
Your nephew Muhammad, yes, by Allah, he is a Prophet, and revelation comes down to him with the words of Allah.
The Quran, and I follow his religion, Islam. Prophet, revelation, Quran, Islam.
You have said a lot to me, my son. Come here.
Sit down and talk to me.
What is this religion you mention? And what does it call to? Where are you going, Ammar? To take care of something, my daughter.
You have been leaving me for a long time, then you disappear for a while and I don't know what you are doing. When I ask you, you say: to take care of something. What is this matter?
And you, Umm Ammar? To the house of Abu al-Hakam ibn Hisham.
His wife called me for something. Rather, say for her service. Isn't her maid enough for her? Her maid is unwell.
And indeed, Banu Makhzum have a right over us. Are we not their clients? Their clients.
Their clients, but we are not their slaves. Even if in the past you were a servant to one of them, he freed you and married you to my father.
Then he passed away, so why do Banu Makhzum still serve you as if you were still. No, my son.
Do not let pride overtake you in matters beyond our ability.
And I will not deny people's kindness. I came from Yemen to this town, and Banu Makhzum sheltered me, placed me under their protection, and included me among their clients, so they held authority over me because of that.
No one has control except its Creator. What did he say?
My son, he only calls us to good.
So stick to him and keep it to yourself until
until Allah brings about His command.
Welcome, O Umar. Welcome, son of my sister. Sit down, sit here.
How did you leave al-Khattab? Well. Did you come to honor your uncles or for something else? For both.
As for kindness, we know it, so what is the news?
There is talk that has reached our ears and we have denied it, and I do not think my uncle Abu al-Hakam is unaware of it.
You mean praise.
If what is said is true.
Then we have no argument against him until he makes it clear to us.
So we do not know his intention, and whether it is just something that has happened to him.
Or is it a call he uses to open something against us, so we silence him.
And it has been confirmed to me that Muhammad is calling to his religion in secret to those who believe in him and think he will accept from them, so why did he not start with us when we are the leaders of Quraysh?
He did not misjudge us then, by al-Lat, we will not accept from him.
Before you hear from him? We do not need to hear from him anything other than what has reached us, so we can reject it and deny it.
It is enough evil for him that he has left the religion we found our fathers upon, and by which the Arabs submitted to us.
And if he claims to be a Prophet, he has only said: Follow me and obey me if you wish to obey Allah.
So how could it be that a young man from Banu Hashim leads us and we follow behind him, and we are his followers?
And this is after all that we have given, until we took away their honor and leadership.
So if we say we are not pleased that Banu Hashim should be ahead of us, he says,
I am not calling you to the rule of Banu Hashim.
Rather, to the rule of Allah, Who sent me to you and to all people.
And this.
Aren't you one of the people? Aren't you one of the people, Sumayya?
Yes, I mean.
I don't understand what you mean, sir, so I answer in a way that pleases you. This is a sensible woman who seeks to be content with what you say.
Yes, speak and don't be afraid, you are one of the people, aren't you? Yes, sir, I am one of the people.
That's good, so who are we? And you as well, sir.
That's right. But people have different ranks, sir, and we are your clients and followers.
Didn't I tell you, Sumayyah is a wise woman.
And our cousin Abu Hudhayfa, may Allah bless his soul, did well when he freed her and married her to his servant Yasir al-Ansi. Don't worry, don't worry, I don't need the milk, may your hands be blessed.
Did you understand what I said, my nephew, if Muhammad calls people to his religion.
He only called them to his rule by claiming prophethood.
And who else from Banu Hashim has changed his mind.
No, by Allah, if he calls us, we will reject them in a terrible way.
Sumayya, when dinner time comes, prepare the food and the dishes for our guests, and make plenty, do not hold back. I obey, my master.
Be generous.
Tell our people to call everyone to our meal tonight.
They do not leave a guest, a passerby, or a poor person without inviting him.
No one should serve them food before us.
Thank you.
Women, what are you doing among the women, boy? You have become a man.
Your life.
That's it! The authenticity is about the narrations, not just the news itself.
Your firsthand account.
And that is your prayer. We still hear about Muhammad and his religion, which he left our religion for. What used to be whispers has become open talk.
And we are between believing and denying. What a terrible scene.
And I do not think except that there are now many with you whom we do not know.
And we are heedless, thinking it is something insignificant. O Abu Sufyan.
We have done our utmost not to show you anything from us that you dislike.
Or to see from you what we dislike, and for that reason you see us praying in this valley.
And that is in obedience to the command of the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah. Then Allah willed that the Hour would come upon us.
So leave us as we have left you, and return rightly guided. You will not be asked about what we do, nor will we be asked about what you do. Time continues to bring us all kinds of wonders. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud.
Rather, the son of Umm Abd.
The shepherd of sheep, Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt, now has an argument and a tongue against the leaders of Quraysh, making us and you equal.
You do not ask and you do not act.
And you, Sa'd, are content to be with these lowly people, even though you are who you are from Quraysh and Banu Zuhrah.
Rather, they are better than me. Rather, you are worse than them. Stop, man, and keep away from us. Oh my misfortune.
And power, until we show you some of our strength.
His trial is about what you are in, from listening.
Who did this to you? It's nothing. Don't speak out.
We have inflicted on them as they have inflicted on us.
And I have never found them before today to be more insignificant to me. Who? May your mother lose you. Abu Sufyan and a group with him. What did you say?
Abu Sufyan and a group with him. Abu Sufyan is the leader of Abd Shams.
And you are not one of the leaders of Quraysh until you confront him, and he gets something from you and you get something from him, as you say.
Have you gone mad or what? Don't you remember who we are?
Yes, we are not from Quraysh, we are from Anas, and we are clients of Banu Makhzum, and my mother was a servant of Abu Hudhayfa al-Makhzumi. They all knew this, father, even if you forgot.
The leaders and young men of Quraysh reminded me of this, so how do you dare to.
Sit down, father. Sit down.
And you, mother.
I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
By the morning brightness, and by the night when it grows still, your Lord has not forsaken you nor does He hate you, and surely the Hereafter is better for you than the first.
The first, and your Lord will surely give you so that you will be pleased.
Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter, and He found you lost and guided you, and He found you in need.
And made you self-sufficient. So as for the orphan, do not oppress him, and as for the beggar, do not repel him, and as for the blessing of.
Your Lord's mercy, then speak of it.
What is the news that has reached us, Abu Sufyan?
Is it true, what we heard? Yes, just as you heard.
And when you saw them in the valley in that state.
Why didn't you leave them to what they were in?
Why are you acting like an ostrich, my father?
Don't stir up the fire, Hind. Then.
You acknowledge that it is the fire, and the beginning of the fire is sparks.
If you do not put it out, it will flare up and ignite, and it may soon reach your homes.
These are our family ties, Hind. So, are we like someone who cuts off his own nose? Rather, like someone whose finger becomes infected.
If he leaves it, his whole hand becomes damaged, then the rest of his body.
The wise thing is to cut it off so the rest is saved. A man chose for himself, so what about him? Muhammad.
If only he had chosen for himself as you say, and gone to a mountain to worship alone and spared us.
But he calls to his religion, and some people we know and some we do not have followed him.
We know among them Abu Bakr, Uthman ibn Affan, Uthman ibn Maz'un, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, along with a group from the lower ranks of the people.
So whoever from the people goes out to him,
then he has left you and is against you.
They only obey him to the extent that they disobey you.
And Muhammad does not become a leader except that Banu Hashim become leaders with him.
And we, the sons of Abd Shams, and they, have always been like two competing horses in a race.
Except that we surpassed them with our wealth.
And here is the one raised by Abu Talib, now claiming that he is a Prophet.
And that you are upon nothing. But he does not single out Abd Shams with that. Enough arguing for now.
Here we are, arguing about Muhammad.
He has not spoken to us about his religion yet, nor has he criticized anything we are upon.
And even if some of us follow him, they are just a small group.
No, we will not be the first to cut family ties.
And even though he is from Hashim, we all come together under Abd Manaf.
And they are the closest of Quraysh to us. So will you leave Muhammad and his companions until their matter becomes strong? Until they establish the proof against themselves.
And all the clans of Quraysh will be with us if we declare enmity against them.
And Hashim will have the choice: either they leave him to us and he will have no protector from us,
or they protect him, then they bear his burden, and the rest of Quraysh will abandon them and submit to us instead of them.
That is more likely to make Abd Shams alone have leadership over them.
Patience, patience, and sound judgment, sound judgment.
So either the claim of prophethood will end up being a gain for us in the end,
or a loss for us, and the way out of all of this
is good planning.
This is my statement.
So be fair and obey.
By Allah, it is indeed a good statement.
And it is not the speech of a human being. It is as if a veil was over my eyes and now it has been lifted.
One Lord, who created us all from a single soul.
So we are equal in creation, equal in rights, equal in duties.
We are not superior because of wealth or lineage, except by being first to Allah, remaining steadfast on the path of truth, justice, and righteousness, and racing to do good deeds.
But if Abu Sufyan and his companions
have done to you today what they have done, and among you is Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas,
then what do you think they will do to us tomorrow if we follow the Prophet and leave what they are upon? O Abu Ammar,
you have obligated yourself when you recognized the truth in your son's words.
And what he narrated from the Prophet of Allah, so who is more deserving that we fear him?
Our clients are Banu Makhzum, but our Protector and theirs is Allah.
No, by Allah, I was a slave woman with Abu Hudhayfa al-Makhzumi.
He was righteous and generous, he married me to you and set me free.
But I never lost that status among the women of Quraysh; when they saw me, they would say: the slave woman of Abu Hudhayfa.
And if one of them called me for something, it was only to serve.
I did not sit with them on the same bed. Only now have I realized that if I am a slave of Allah, then none of His creation should share in His authority.
Or have any power over me. Ammar.
Take me now to the Prophet of Allah, so I can pledge allegiance to Islam as you did, and if your father wishes to stay behind out of fear of his masters, the Banu Makhzum,
then that is up to him, for I will continue to honor him in every way.
Except if I have to go against the command of Allah.
Bilal.
Show us how you do it.
There is no need for that. And who asked you about your need? You are only working for my need.
Your father wronged him, and what can the son of Hamama do against that stallion?
Come on, Wahshi. Come on, son of Hamama, show us your strength today.
If you defeat him, you will have a reward from me.
This is Abu, do you hear? May your right hand never be paralyzed.
The Abyssinian supported his own kind.
I don't know why I spend on your food and drink. Beat the fool.
And the heart of a bird, come on.
You? I haven't seen anything better from you today.
No one saw me.
Didn't I forbid you from visiting me? Do you fear your master or what people will say?
If I don't fear for myself, I fear for you. As for your master, today he is happy with you because you have surpassed all your peers.
As for the people, they do not care about a servant meeting a slave girl.
Just as they do not care about an animal going to another animal.
So fulfill your promise and tell your master, for I do not think he will refuse, for the Arabs have always married their slaves to their slave women. The time has not come yet.
And when will its time be?
And I thought you would be in good spirits today.
Rayhana.
Don't you understand what's in my heart? By Allah, I don't want you to become my wife tomorrow instead of today. But you do nothing. That's because I don't want to have a child who belongs to someone else.
Like an animal gives birth. I want my freedom first.
Does an animal have the ability to love and marry?
They just drive it to another fine animal, hoping to increase their wealth.
So how can I increase their slaves? Do you really hope that Jubayr ibn Mut'im will set you free?
He might do it. How miserable you are, Wahshi, and how miserable I am with you if you are deceived by false hopes and spend your life on a hope that cannot be reached.
The Arabs used to say: despair is one of the two comforts.
The other comfort is death, and that is easier for me.
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. And warn your closest relatives.
And lower your wing to those of the believers who follow you.
Allah the Almighty has spoken the truth.
Come on, hurry up. Muhammad only called his people to openly proclaim his message, and by my life, before today it was just a single report.
Soon it will become visible, and seeing is not like hearing. Seeing is not like hearing. O sons of Hashim, you have heard.
You have heard from my nephew Muhammad, and you know he is the most truthful, the most righteous, and the best in character.
And he is as you said when you were asked.
What do you think if I told you that horses are coming down the side of the mountain?
Would you believe me? You would say yes, we have never known you to lie.
A lie. Then he called you to his religion, that you worship none but Allah.
And that he is His Prophet and Messenger, and you have the choice in what he has called you to.
This is not why I have gathered you at this hour, and he is more entitled to establish his proof and present his evidence.
But I know that he has brought a great message.
Quraysh has never seen anything like this before.
I saw faces that were grim and others that were darkened and gloomy, so I recognized the dislike in them.
And it is only that they are about to make up their minds.
And they intend evil against Muhammad from among themselves. As for me, by Allah, I will not hand over my nephew to anyone, and I have heard.
You heard me say to him: Go ahead with what you have been commanded.
By Allah, I will continue to protect and defend you.
And I have spoken, so say as I have said. Yes, by Allah, this is what I have said and what I say.
By Allah, it is the same! O sons of Hashim.
Take from me, for I am indeed his uncle, by Allah.
I have not seen anyone who brought more harm upon his father's sons.
What did Muhammad bring you? He turns away from the religion of his fathers and his people.
Then he attacks your idols, so what will you do if you wake up and all the Arabs have become your enemies?
Do we have any strength against all the Arabs? And if so, then the right of whoever takes him and detains him is a calamity upon me, so be it.
That is easier than losing the support of the Quraysh clans.
The Arabs do not support them. No, by Allah, we will protect him as long as we live. O Banu Hashim.
You have heard my words and his words, so who among you agrees? You are our master and leader, Abu Talib.
All of us, all of us agree.
Then disperse.
What you feel about him is what should be in your heart, and in the heart of every man from Quraysh.
He was protective over his people, fearing that their unity would break, their group would split, and their family ties would be severed, then they would turn against each other. If they did that,
their strength would be lost, their unity would fall apart, and they would become prey for the other Arabs.
Or is this really going to happen? May your mother lose you! Did you think it was just a word to be said, for whoever wants to take it and whoever wants to leave it?
We are the people of the Sacred Sanctuary, O Zayd, unlike the rest of the Arabs.
And among the Arabs, we have gained a respect like its sanctity.
And they honor us because of its honor.
Obedience to us is a religion; no one opposes our command except that he opposes the command of his gods.
Trade, O Umar. The sanctuary and trade.
With the leadership of Quraysh. This and that, there is no harm.
Quraysh would not be harmed if Allah has chosen them for the sanctity of the sanctuary and brought them benefits through it to help them maintain and serve it and provide for its visitors.
Yes, by Allah, this is from that.
Through the sanctuary, the wealth of Quraysh increased and they gained honor among the people.
Then they use their wealth to protect the sanctuary, defend it, and support its pilgrims.
Allah combined for them the authority of religion and wealth, and with these two they became leaders over the Arabs and the Arabs submitted to them. So what if the Arabs wake up one day and the unity of Quraysh is gone?
And someone says: Quraysh is not upon anything of the true religion.
Then they have no more sanctity than anyone else, so who would follow their religion?
And we would not perform their rituals until they change, and if they do not,
we would worship Allah in our own homes and dwellings, or we would compete with them for the sanctuary if we are able, so we can perform our rituals in the way our true religion commands us.
Where would Quraysh go then, and what would remain for them?
This is my position.
And I will bring against him the sons of Adi.
Both their young and old.
What's wrong with you? Don't stay away from the elders of Quraysh, what concerns them concerns them.
And now they have gathered in Dar al-Nadwa. As I said, the elders of Quraysh.
They sent me to them. How can you say this when you know that the people have gathered to decide their opinion about Muhammad and his religion?
There is not a single clan of Quraysh except that someone has come to represent it.
So will Banu Adiyy stay behind the rest of the people? They will not stay behind, and you are with the people.
You are older than me, and Quraysh knows, and I know, that you are more determined than I am.
And more eloquent in speech, better in expression, and stronger in resolve. That's enough, that's enough. By Allah, your words do not deceive me, and you only intended. By the Lord of the Kaaba, I have not deviated from the truth.
And it does not harm me that my brother takes precedence over me, and his resolve has put him forward, and then our father al-Khattab put him forward and gave him his place in the people's gathering.
And Adiyy was pleased with this, so he gave you an opinion.
And Quraysh was pleased with him, so they made you their ambassador and defender, and I was pleased as well.
But I am not pleased. Everyone is facilitated for what he was created for, O Umar.
Everyone is facilitated for what he was created for.
If what you are gathering for is good, then it is enough for the family of al-Khattab that one man among them witnesses it, and if it is evil,
then it is enough for us regarding evil that one man carries it on our behalf.
You are playing with arrows, while your fathers inside are dealing with a great matter concerning Muhammad. They are weighing their opinions about him.
Our elders are enough for us; they have the authority, and we have the sword if they wish. Umar has become one of the elders, even though he is younger than me. He should sit with us.
Al-Khattab gave up his place for him, and Adi was pleased with that.
By Allah, he is worthy of it, even if he is harsh at times.
He has maternal relatives among us, so do not speak ill of him.
Khalid is right. And who said I intended to speak ill of him? Your cunning look does not escape me, Umar.
I know you better than anyone else.
Now, come on Umair, make a bet for me and for Safwan on two camels. Two camels.
Isn't one camel enough for me or for you? If you win, your joy will be doubled, and if you lose, my worry will be doubled. Safwan ibn Umayyah, the one who pays the debts of Batha, fears poverty.
Yet he slaughters a camel for his guests every night and doesn't care. I don't mind feeding a camel for its due, but as for the loss. And what is its due?
What did you say? You feed, it is said, Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf, the one who pays the debts of Batha. If it is said, then the one who said it spoke the truth, and he is truthful. But what is said about Amr ibn al-As?
It is said that when people are confused and have no solution, they say, "No one can handle it except Amr." I don't know, is this cleverness something to be praised for?
Deceit is something to be blamed for, so I am confused about the matter. They are not the same. If it is in our favor, then it is praiseworthy cunning.
And if it is against us, then it is blameworthy deceit. So, what did you say? He will give us two camels.
Two camels then. Where do we start? With Safwan. With Safwan.
He has fainted.
The debtor, cousin. Is this what you do to your cousin and your close friend? The son of the matter has nothing except that I cast the lots. It's alright, Safwan.
You have a lot of wealth, and so does your father. If you lose some of it, he will help you with his wealth. My wealth and my father's wealth are not greater than your father's wealth, Al-Walid ibn al-Mughira.
His Lord has raised the necks of men in the two towns, Mecca and Ta'if.
You called upon al-Lat and al-Uzza, so why?
And I did not arrive until I had circumambulated them, and I kept offering gifts to them.
I slaughter and feed, I slaughter and feed, maybe because you did not raise your voice in supplication so they could hear you.
Or maybe you do not slaughter for them the best of your camels.
Aren't you playing now, uncle? If your companion Safwan did not arrive until he had circumambulated al-Lat and al-Uzza, and he kept offering them gifts from his wealth and his camels.
Then he called them, but they did not respond.
So what will they do with Umair ibn al-As, who has not been with them for a month or more, and has not offered them anything except a thin sheep.
And you, Abu Jandal.
Abu Jandal has become preoccupied with the elders' conversation instead of us.
Have you made all the gods into one god?
And they abandon our gods and idols, then it is said: we have not seen anything we dislike. It does not matter what he says if we remain patient with our gods.
Or do you fear that Muhammad might tempt you away from the religion of your forefathers?
Then you are in doubt about your religion. Not everyone is the same in this, O Abu al-Walid.
Where are the men we used to count among us? Where is Abu Bakr?
Where is Uthman? Where is Abu Ubayda?
Where is Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf? And we only recognized those who had people to protect them.
So he did not care to show the religion of Muhammad.
