Asmaa asked, saying: I want details about something attributed to you regarding the obligation of women working in certain cases. As for the basic principle regarding women working.
We say that this goes back to the natural disposition. The natural disposition is that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has given the responsibility of guardianship to men. For this reason, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: Men are guardians over women.
And Allah, the Exalted, says: Provide for them from it, clothe them, and speak to them kindly. The imams, may Allah have mercy on them, among the commentators, agreed that what is meant in the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic,
Provide for them from it and clothe them, what is meant by this is the guardians among men, from fathers and husbands. The address here is directed to women and children, meaning they are not commanded regarding work, and the address is directed to.
their guardians among their husbands, fathers, and brothers. This has been narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas, Mujahid ibn Jabr, Ikrimah, and Al-Hasan.
They agree that what is meant by this is men. As for the natural disposition, the natural disposition since Allah, the Exalted, created.
Adam and placed them in Paradise, Allah the Exalted made clear to Adam and warned him about.
the consequences of obeying Iblis by eating from the tree, that Allah the Mighty and Majestic would punish them for that by sending them down to the world. For this reason, Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: He will drive you both out of Paradise, and you will suffer.
That is, you will suffer, He will drive you both out, you and your wife, but you will suffer because you are responsible, whereas in this world.
The suffering will be for you, because the matter concerns you, since you are responsible for providing. This meaning was mentioned by more than one scholar, such as Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, and others. For this reason, we say that the aspect of providing.
The aspect of providing and fulfilling the woman's needs is assigned to the man. This is in terms of obligation. Does this mean it is forbidden for the woman to work? We say no.
But it is part of explaining the natural structure for the order of people's lives. Why?
Because you find that Allah, the Exalted, has created the woman with a certain aspect, and this specific aspect is gentleness.
And the aspect of childbirth, nurturing, breastfeeding, providing care, and so on, as well as emotion and fear, which makes traveling and working in the world limited for her.
Unlike the nature of man, who travels, migrates, moves, works in construction, drives trucks, digs wells, and other things that are not part of the woman's nature.
So, her ability to travel and work is limited, while his is complete by nature. That is why the command is directed to him with encouragement.
And the command is directed to the woman according to what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has created her for, without addressing any prohibition.
So the matter remains permissible, the matter remains permissible.
As for the obligation regarding women, is it obligatory for a woman to work or not? We say.
We say Allah, the Exalted, has commanded men and women, so the basic rule is that it is obligatory for men, not obligatory for women. Is it obligatory in a difficult situation? We say it is obligatory for a woman to work in a difficult situation, and that is in certain cases.
Among these cases is if a woman does not find anyone to support her, then she must work enough for herself to avoid destruction and for her children, so this instruction is directed to her.
Also, among the cases is when a woman must do a job that only a woman can do, even if she is otherwise provided for.
For example, if women need education, such as teaching other women, or also explaining religious duties or even.
Explaining religious duties or worldly benefits, and there is no one else to do this, then it becomes necessary for a woman to teach her own gender.
Because Allah, the Exalted, commanded seeking knowledge and also forbade the mixing of men and women, so this matter can only be fulfilled in this way and under these circumstances.
And similar cases are measured by this in different types of needs and necessities, and every situation is assessed according to its own measure.
