In the presence of social media, the sharing of prophetic narrations has become widespread without verification, dear shaykh, and even some religious information or fatwas are shared without verification.
So even for me to pass on a message as an individual, what are the guidelines and limits for me?
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. May Allah send prayers, peace, and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment. To proceed.
Regarding narrations from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we must know that speaking about the Prophet, peace be upon him, is in fact speaking about Allah.
Because the Prophet ﷺ does not speak from his own desire; it is only revelation that is revealed to him.
As Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: He does not speak from his own desire; it is only revelation that is revealed. Then, the Prophet, peace be upon him, is only a messenger from Allah; he does not bring anything from himself or from his own accord.
For this reason, Allah, Verheven en Hoog is Hij, says about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: The Messenger's duty is only to convey the message.
So he conveys from Allah, Verheven en Hoog is Hij, what is revealed to him. Allah, de Verhevene, has protected him from falling into error or mistake.
And this is the requirement of following, which Allah, de Machtige en Majesteitelijke, has commanded us with. Therefore, we must know that conveying from the Prophet, peace be upon him,
whether it is conveying a legal ruling, a statement, or an act of worship, this is one of the serious matters that a person must be cautious about.
This is for several reasons. The first is that strictness has been mentioned in the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
And the warning against lying about him, because lying about him is like lying about Allah, Verheven en Hoog is Hij.
The Prophet ﷺ said: Lying about me is not like lying about anyone else. Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire.
What is meant by this is that the Prophet ﷺ wanted to emphasize and warn against lying about him.
And he threatened those who do so with painful punishment, meaning that a place in the Fire is prepared for him.
For this reason, al-Bukhari narrated from the hadith of Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: If I were to fall from the sky,
that would be easier for me than to narrate something from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he did not say. For this reason, a believer should be cautious when narrating statements and also narrations.
attributed to the Prophet ﷺ unless he is certain about them.
The second danger, and the second matter regarding narrating from the Prophet ﷺ, is that narration about him is different from others because it involves worship.
This is because when you recount a story, a tale, a saying, or something like proverbs or poetry from someone else,
these do not require any action, but rather serve for entertainment, companionship, and similar stories from those before us.
But narrating from the Prophet ﷺ, whether a saying or an action, requires worship, as people worship Allah through this.
So if you say that the Prophet ﷺ says this, does this, drinks this, wears this, and so on from his actions ﷺ, and you are lying, then people do not take this as mere stories from their fathers and grandfathers.
Rather, they take it as an example to follow, so you are helping to spread bid'a and newly invented matters and actions that the Prophet ﷺ did not do, and that is why we find among many people.
Among the statements and actions are things with no basis, and the reason for this is the transmission and circulation of things attributed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that are not from him. That is why we say the danger in this.
Is that things enter into the religion of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that are not part of it.
And this responsibility is on the one who transmits it. If a person is careless in transmitting a narration, even if he did not make it up himself, he has contributed to it and thus caused the introduction of bid'a.
At that point, he is blamed and criticized for it, and also condemned and strongly warned about this. The Prophet ﷺ.
Says: It is enough of a sin for a person to narrate everything he hears. What is meant by this is that if a person narrates every narration or every statement.
Even if it is not from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he will inevitably bear some of the sin that comes with it.
For this reason, if this applies to someone other than the Messenger of Allah, then it applies even more to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Meaning, if you narrate everything, you will inevitably fall into lying.
That is why we say a person should be careful.
In the narration he relates from the Prophet, peace be upon him, there is a third matter related to the dangers in narrating.
The fabricated and narrated hadiths about the Prophet, peace be upon him, which are not authentically attributed to him,
contain some objectionable meanings and innovative rulings that may not be acceptable, because the religion of Islam is the religion of natural disposition and reason.
This causes some sound souls to turn away from the very foundation of the legislation due to the existence of false narrations.
That is why some people are careless in transmitting narrations, stories, and tales about the Prophet ﷺ that are fabricated.
So you find that some people are put off by them and attribute them to the Sharia, while in reality they are not authentic to begin with.
This has contributed to turning people away from the law of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
So this has helped in diverting people from the command and judgment of Allah, Verheven en Hoog is Hij.
Then also, among the important matters regarding carefulness, is to point out something from the part of the question I mentioned, which is about the guidelines.
What are the boundaries and guidelines a person should set when transmitting narrations?
We say that mere suspicion, the suspicion that a hadith is weak, does not allow a person to transmit it if it is from the hadiths.
Mere suspicion, for this the Prophet ﷺ said in what is narrated from the hadith of al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, as narrated by Imam Muslim in the introduction.
And it also came in the Sunan: Whoever narrates from me a hadith and thinks or is thought that it is a lie, then he is one of the liars. This means that with mere doubt, you are one of the liars, even if you are not the original fabricator.
You are only a partner in that lie because you circulated it, and for this reason, many people circulate religious rulings.
With things like this, at that point he falls into some error and also the consequences.
Carefulness in this is that a person, for example, follows a scholar among the scholars who, for example, have expertise in judging the narrations attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
Is it authentic or not authentic, and likewise, that scholar is also a mujtahid.
In recent times, things are easier. In the past, it was difficult because a person had to ask a specific scholar or travel to him, especially regarding hadith.
Now books are available and circulated, and there are programs that contain
statements from early imams and later verifying imams who judge the hadiths. So if someone follows them in this, then his matter in this
is broad. For this reason, we say he must be cautious when narrating from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so he does not fall into error. That is why we find in many people's questions
the spread of many hadiths, and the reason is social media.
Likewise, these programs that spread, perhaps within minutes, to tens or hundreds of thousands of people, spreading statements.
Innovative ones, as well as hadiths, so he must be cautious and fear Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so that he is not held accountable.
So that he is not held accountable and sells, then among the important matters I want to point out is that whoever spreads hadiths and narrations is seeking reward, but if he knew the danger, he would refrain.
And if he knew the danger, he would refrain. So when you spread a hadith or a statement or a sunnah, claiming it is a sunnah, then it turns out to be otherwise.
How will you count those people to whom you have spread it?
Then they spread it further, and you are the cause of bringing it about, you were the source in this, following those paths.
In all of this, you are sinful. You might not reach all of them, so you are still sinful for what remains, even after you correct it. For this reason, a person might not realize where correction is needed.
Because he might send it to a hundred people, then he brings the correction, but the correction only reaches fifty.
Or sixty, or someone sees it, or those hundred in the first time spread it further. Also, you find that people are more eager to affirm than to deny. A lie spreads, but the denial does not spread.
This is something well known. Even in the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, you find that the narrations that are not authentic,
clarifying to people that this hadith is not authentic and should not be circulated.
People do not circulate the denial, while they do circulate the affirmation. This is something observed in people’s nature. They are eager to pass on the reward, but not eager to deny it. We say that the Prophet ﷺ
He has clarified the virtue of defending him, defending his religion, and defending against lies about him. So, when the Prophet ﷺ says: Whoever lies about me intentionally, let him take his seat in the Fire.
This indicates that whoever defends his sunnah, purifies it, and removes lies from it, will take his seat in Paradise. This is because Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is more generous. Therefore, we must realize.
That just as there is danger in spreading hadith, there is also great reward in.
Clarifying what is authentic from what is weak, distinguishing them, and defending the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. This is a call to anyone who comes across something being spread to take action and spread it.
To the people as a correction, for he will receive a great reward for that, which is great in its weight, size, and consequence.
Greater than the sin that befalls a person for lying and spreading fabricated hadith. May I make my calls, sheikh?
